Synopsis: Volume 5

Straight to action! It's the Echizen Ryouma - Ibu Shinji match. Ryouma begins with a twist serve, taking the first game, but Ibu counters with his own twist serve. Nevertheless, Ryouma is leading 4-0 when an accident happens and his eyelid is cut open. Ryouma wants to continue despite the injury, and Tezuka gives him an ultimatum: end the match in 10 minutes or forfeit. Ryouma does as instructed and Seigaku wins against Fudoumine. Both schools advance to the Tokyo Prefectural Tournament that will be held in May. Meanwhile, in Kanagawa, Rikkai Daigaku Fuzoku demolishes their opponents.

After the tournament, Kawamura invites his teammates to celebrate in his family's sushi place. Interestingly enough, this seems to be the first time he has done so. We also get to see Kawamura's father mistake Tezuka (who is in shirtsleeves, by the way → *anehan drools*) for a teacher. While the Seigaku regulars are celebrating, the reporter Inoue gets his ass handed to him by Nanjirou in the Echizens' tennis court.

We conclude the chapter by Tezuka asking Ryuuzaki-sensei for permission to play a match with Ryouma. And whatever the scanlation might say, Tezuka actually calls Ryouma "Echizen" here, not "Ryouma".

Captain and bench coach: Tachibana Kippei
Vice-captain: Kamio Akira
Other team members: Ibu Shinji, Ishida Tetsu, Sakurai Masaya, Mori Tatsunori and Uchimura Kyousuke

Fudoumine, an unseeded team with a violent reputation. They were disqualified from the Newcomer Tournament the previous fall, but they are now back stronger than ever, led by player-coach Tachibana Kippei.

Fudoumine's coach was a vile, unfair fellow who let the upper-year students mistreat the first-years. It all changed when a new second-year student, Tachibana Kippei, came to the school. He led a rebellion against the coach and the upper-year players with the mistreated but talented first-years.

Tachibana took an a huge responsibility for the team -- a responsibility that no 2nd-year middle school student should ever have -- by assuming the positions of both captain and coach. He is a serious-minded boy, and he has his team's respect and devotion. When he and Seigaku's Tezuka meet for the first time in the District Preliminaries (in the previous volume), his statement of his position is entirely matter-of-fact and he does not engage in any kind of posturing. He merely shakes Tezuka's hand and expresses his wish for good matches.

Of the rest of the players, it is Kamio and Ibu who get most page-space here. Kamio is a "speed-demon" who is able to go head on head with Kaidou Kaoru and play evenly with him. Ibu for his part is on the level of Fuji Shuusuke, at least according to Ryuuzaki-sensei.

Discussion topics

Am I the only one who thinks Tezuka looks troubled (or as troubled as someone with such a poker face can look) when he requests the permission to play a match with Ryouma? Has he seen something in Ryouma's tennis that makes him wary?

Nanjirou is pretty dismissive towards Ryouma when he talks to Inoue and Shiba. What do you think of that?
