Welcome to another week of Tenipuri manga reading! Your hapless commentator was distracted by apartment hunting and totally forgot to post this yesterday, for which she most humbly apologises. But, onwards to the discussion!

Synopsis: Volume 3

Volume three begins with a filler chapter, where Ryouma beats bully no. 5, Sasabe Sr. Soon, though, we get back to training. Inui has prepared a special training menu for the regulars. They also get a surprise visitor in the form of Kirihara Akaya from Rikkai (note the correct form of the names), who accidentally found his way to Seigaku.

In ch. 20, Momo and Ryouma end up in a street court, where they are thoroughly trounced in doubles by Gyokurin's Fukawa-Izumi doubles pair. This inspires Momo and Ryouma to volunteer to play doubles in district preliminaries, where their opponent is indeed the very same doubles pair from Gyokurin. Momo and Ryouma win, albeit by using unorthodox playing tactics. The rest of the team also win their matches against Gyokurin as well as against their next opponent.

In the next volume, Seigaku will meet Fudoumine. Stay tuned!

An interesting fact

It is interesting to note that Gyokurin's regulars wear the same kind of uniforms as people who are presumably their other club members, whereas Seigaku has a special regular uniform.

Despite his mock outrage at Ryouma not treating him as a senpai, Momo is easy-going and friendly. He encourages the first-years to call him Momoshiro instead of Momoshiro-senpai -- with not very great success. He quickly befriends Ryouma, spending time with him outside the tennis practices. He does have a competitive side, though, as when he does not want to lose to Ryouma when they first play or as in this volume when a loss in doubles inspires him to volunteer to play doubles in the district preliminaries. He also has an on-going rivalry with Kaidou Kaoru.

Momo is a power player, and aggressive baseliner by play style. It is easy to underestimate Momo due to his cheerful demeanour and his straightforward playing style. (Not really very spoilerish, but greyed out all the same.) He has the ability to intuitively understand his opponent's playing, though, which is something that will become more apparent later on in the series.

Discussion topics and a poll

The appearance of unpleasant people and bullies that Our Heroes get to defeat seems to be a reoccurring theme in this manga. What do you think about that?

Question to old readers: Do you remember how you viewed Momoshiro at first? Did your view of him change when you read the manga further?

Personally, I'm not a fan of Momoshiro. I thought he was annoying at first and my opinion of him didn't change throughout the series. However, I was impressed with his ability to intuitively read his opponent's. It reminds me of Tezuka's inherent ability to understand his opponent as explained during his match against Yamato during Shin.

I think it was necessary to have some bullies along the way for the 'heroes' to defeat -- it's a way to get people cheering for them, after all, and it's always satisfying to see bad guys get their comeuppence.

I saw the anime long before reading the manga, so my first impressions of everyone came from there. I liked Momo a lot, he seemed so good-natured and easy-going, with a kind of big brother attitude toward the younger kids (who were already getting a hard time from Arai and others, so Momo was refreshing.)

I forgot to comment again ^^; But I buddy-ship Momoshiro and Ryoma so much right now. Their teamwork is endearingly inept! ♥
As for the topic, I think trouncing bullies now and then is a healthy pastime for manga heroes.
And since I still can't judge anyone's tennis skills, I voted for Momo in the poll out of sheer loyalty. 'Cause he's my pal now. *nods*

I'm glad you're still reading and commenting, regardless when the comment comes in! :D I shouldn't be talking - I haven't been commenting or replying to discussions at all, because I was so sick for more than a week. >_>;

Ahaha, I always did think Momo and Ryouma's double combo in this volume was one of the funnier matches - and endearing really is the word to describe it. :D

I shall probably slink off to prepare for next volume's discussion post. Hope to see you there too! :)
